The Hokies Got Their Guy: James Franklin Set to Lead Virginia Tech Football

The Hokies have officially entered a new era — and this one comes with genuine excitement buzzing around Blacksburg.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported Monday afternoon that Virginia Tech is finalizing a deal to hire James Franklin as the program’s next head football coach. It’s not just a major move for Virginia Tech — it’s one of the most ambitious and energizing hires the school has made in decades. For a fanbase hungry for a resurgence, Franklin represents a proven winner with the stature to immediately elevate the program.

Franklin arrives with a resume few active coaches can match. Across his tenures at Penn State and Vanderbilt, he compiled a 128–60 record, rebuilt two programs, and established himself as one of the sport’s most respected leaders. Just last season, he guided Penn State to the College Football Playoff Semifinals, and he delivered a Big Ten Championship in 2016—proof he can compete at the highest level of college football.

His firing earlier this season, following losses to Oregon, UCLA, and Northwestern, did little to diminish his national reputation. In fact, his availability made him one of the most intriguing names on the coaching market. For Virginia Tech to land a coach with Franklin’s pedigree is both a statement and a spark.

Franklin replaces his former assistant Brent Pry, dismissed in September after an 0–3 start and a 16–24 record over four years. Now, Virginia Tech turns the keys over to a coach known for strong leadership, elite recruiting, and program-wide organization—traits the Hokies have been craving.

Perhaps most importantly, Franklin brings deep Virginia recruiting ties, giving Tech a realistic pathway to reclaiming in-state talent and strengthening its roster from the inside out.

For a program that hasn’t hit the 10-win mark in nearly a decade, this hire is more than a change—it’s a jolt of optimism. Franklin’s arrival signals that the Hokies are serious about returning to national prominence, and his track record suggests he knows exactly how to get there.

Virginia Tech didn’t just get a coach. They got a leader with experience, vision, and the ability to make Blacksburg buzz again.

Stay tuned to Sons of Saturday as we continue covering the dawn of the Franklin Era in Hokie Nation.

A Proven Winner with National Pedigree

Franklin arrives with a résumé unmatched by nearly any ACC coach not named Dabo Swinney. Across 15 seasons as a head coach, Franklin has accumulated a 128-60 career record, including 104-45 in 12 seasons at Penn State—the second-most wins in Nittany Lions history.

His tenure in Happy Valley included:

  • Six 10-win seasons

  • A Big Ten championship in 2016

  • Ten bowl-eligible seasons

  • A College Football Playoff run in 2024–25, including wins over SMU and Boise State before a semifinal loss to Notre Dame

Last season, Franklin did something no coach had achieved since the playoff expanded: steer Penn State into the national semifinals. That success, paired with his recruiting reputation and brand power, makes him one of the most accomplished coaches ever hired by an ACC program outside of Clemson or Florida State.

Why Penn State Let Him Go

Franklin’s firing shocked the college football world. Penn State began this season ranked No. 3 but spiraled to a 3-3 start, falling to Oregon in double overtime before back-to-back losses to UCLA and Northwestern — despite being heavy favorites.

His Achilles’ heel was well-documented: a 4-20 record vs. top-10 opponents and a 1-10 mark against Ohio State. Despite his consistency, those shortcomings ultimately led to his exit.

Franklin later revealed on ESPN’s College GameDay that he learned of his firing just 15 minutes before a scheduled team meeting.

“I was in shock,” Franklin said. “I just wanted to tell my kids before they saw it online.”

Penn State negotiated his buyout down to $9 million, clearing the way for Virginia Tech to pursue him aggressively.

Why This Is a Major, Program-Changing Hire for Virginia Tech

Simply put: the Hokies landed the most accomplished coach to change jobs this cycle.

This is a statement hire — one that signals Virginia Tech’s serious intent to rejoin the national conversation and reclaim its reputation as a sleeping giant in the ACC.

For years, Hokie fans have waited for momentum. Under Pry, the program showed glimpses but never consistency, finishing 16-24 and failing to return to the national rankings.

Franklin’s arrival brings:

  • Instant credibility on the recruiting trail

  • National media attention

  • A proven identity on offense

  • Experience rebuilding programs at Vanderbilt and Penn State

The ACC landscape is shifting. Clemson is reloading. Florida State is stabilizing after turnover. Miami remains unpredictable. Adding a coach with Franklin’s stature instantly elevates Virginia Tech to the forefront of the conference race.

A Chance at Reinvention in Blacksburg

Franklin, at age 53, gets something few coaches of his profile ever receive: a fresh start with a passionate fan base craving a winner.

And Virginia Tech gets something it hasn’t had since the Frank Beamer era — a coach with a national profile capable of attracting recruits, staff talent, and national attention from day one.

With a manageable 2026 schedule that includes home games against VMI, Old Dominion, James Madison, Virginia, Georgia Tech, NC State and Pitt — plus ACC road trips to Clemson and Miami — Franklin’s path to early success is realistic.

This is a mutually beneficial marriage: a new chapter for Franklin and a bold, ambitious reset for the Hokies.

The Bottom Line

Virginia Tech didn’t just hire a coach. They hired a headline. A brand. A proven winner.

James Franklin’s impending arrival in Blacksburg has already reshaped the ACC’s coaching landscape — and perhaps the trajectory of a program eager to return to national prominence.

This is the most exciting Hokies hire since the Beamer era began. And it signals something loud and clear:

Virginia Tech is swinging big. Finally!

Give a cheer and Hokie Welcome to James Franklin, "Let's go Hokies!"
