Former Boise State Basketball assistant coach David Moats is coming to Blacksburg after Kevin Giltner left the Hokies to become Wofford’s new head basketball coach.

Giltner’s departure left a sizable hole at one of Virginia Tech’s basketball assistant coaching positions, a position that he had filled for five years. Just prior to entering his sixth season as an assistant coach, he decided to take on the head coaching job for the Terriers down in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Now, Moats has filled that vacancy at the assistant coaching position.

Moats’ most notable achievement, arguably, is in eight seasons with Boise State, he helped the Broncos put up six 20-win seasons en route to three NCAA Tournament appearances, per Boise State Athletics. Furthermore, his 174-90 record during his time at Boise State added an exclamation point to his tenure with the Broncos.

Additionally, Moats’ expertise is not limited to just coaching. When he was promoted to assistant coach at Boise State in 2022, he was also named the director of recruiting for the program. Having gained experience with navigating the transfer portal in the role, Moats could help the Hokies add more talent through the portal come the end of the 2025-2026 season.

For a rebuilding Virginia Tech program, Moats’ hiring could be the start of something great in Blacksburg; not only with assisting the coaching staff on the court, but also with recruiting players to help set the program up for future success.

Having grown up in Northern Virginia, my love for sports first started with watching games at Nationals park. However, my fandom proudly extends to the West Coast as well. As my dad grew up in the Bay Area of California, his love for the A’s and Raiders has been passed down to me and has made me a lifelong fan of the two teams.

Now I can safely say that my collegiate loyalty lies with Virginia Tech. I’m currently studying Communications at Tech with hopes of building a career in entertainment, whatever that may entail.

My favorite sports memories in Blacksburg here have been made on game days. My favorite so far was my first Commonwealth Clash experience, as I watched the Hokies destroy UVA 55-17 up in Lane Stadium North my freshman year (and also punch their ticket to the Military Bowl in the final game of the season). This will probably change, however, when Tech wins again next year.
