Head Coach Brent Pry preps the team for Week 1 vs. ODU (Virginia Tech Athletics)

Week 1: ODU

Good morning Hokies! It’s week 1 of the college season, with Virginia Tech taking on Old Dominion University at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg. Gates open at 6pm, with kickoff at 8pm EST, with the game being televised on the ACC Network and over the air on 105.3 “The Bear.”

Game Changers

The Hokies look to reclaim their honor after dropping last year's matchup with ODU 17-20 at Fordham Field. While Tech is certainly the stronger team on paper, ODU comes in with a totally revamped roster. Only four of last year's ODU starting offense remain, so we’ll have to see how chemistry plays into this game.

Tech’s QB play is one thing to look out for in year two of Brent Pry’s era as Head Coach. Grant Wells is QB1, but Kyron Drones is expected to play every week. If Pry can find the proper balance between the two, without scripting the offense or telegraphing plays, this could be a very fun year.

Weather

The weather should be absolutely gorgeous today, with light winds and clear skies throughout the day. While the sun is up and tailgates are running, it should reach the low 80s before dropping down to ~60 by kickoff.

Me Ronnie

Born into a family of Hokies, I can remember watching Frank Beamer and Tyrod Taylor on Saturdays with the family, so attending VT was always the dream.

In 2020, I began my time at Virginia Tech in the Sports Media Analytics program and eventually joined the Sons in January of 2023 as the softball beat writer. Now, I’ve got football, basketball, and baseball coverage, plus you’ll see some of my photographs in articles throughout the website.

Graduation is on the horizon, but I can’t wait to come back in the fall to begin my Master’s and continue working with the team!
