The Military Bowl: VT vs. Tulane

Good morning Hokies! For one last time in 2023, Virginia Tech will take the field in Annapolis, Maryland to take on Tulane in the Military Bowl! Kickoff is at 2:00 p.m. at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, with the game televised on ESPN.

Game Outlook

For the first time under Brent Pry, Virginia Tech is going bowling. The Hokies most recent bowl appearance was the Pinstripe Bowl in 2021, where VT lost to Maryland 54-10. The 2022 season marked the ending of Tech’s legendary 27-year bowl streak when the team finished with a 3-8 record.

Tulane (11-2) is a very talented G5 team. The Green Wave made it to the AAC Championship, losing to SMU 26-14 on December 2nd. The two biggest headlines since then are that QB Michael Pratt is sitting out for the Military Bowl, and Head Coach Willie Fritz is going to Houston. Slade Nagle, the team’s offensive coordinator, will take over in the meantime. Two of the most important to the Green Wave’s success won’t be there. Tulane is also missing several defensive players, and major shifts in the spread have shown wavering confidence in the Green Wave.

Virginia Tech is also missing a few players, including Dae’Quan Wright, Nasir Peoples, and Jalen Stroman. This will hurt VT, particularly on defense, but the big highlight has been who’s in, not who’s out. Kyron Drones and Bhayshul Tuten are both lacing up their cleats, so VT shouldn’t have a problem moving the ball.

Weather

Here’s just a small snapshot of what we have coming up today. Bring a rain jacket or poncho because it’s gonna be a rainy one. On the bright side, at least it won’t be too cold.

Me Ronnie

Born into a family of Hokies, I can remember watching Frank Beamer and Tyrod Taylor on Saturdays with the family, so attending VT was always the dream.

In 2020, I began my time at Virginia Tech in the Sports Media Analytics program and eventually joined the Sons in January of 2023 as the softball beat writer. Now, I’ve got football, basketball, and baseball coverage, plus you’ll see some of my photographs in articles throughout the website.

Graduation is on the horizon, but I can’t wait to come back in the fall to begin my Master’s and continue working with the team!
