What to do against Cover 2?

The Hokies finally got into the win column this past week in their win over Marshall.  The Hokies overcame a slow start and executed much better in the second half offensively and put together enough scoring drives to pull away from the Herd.  One Issue the Hokies have faced over the last couple of games has been how to attack different versions of zone coverage.  While Tech has many talented skill players and an offensive coordinator that has been known to be very good at making adjustments, it has been difficult for the Hokies to dissect some of the coverages being seen each week.  In this weeks video, Ill go over some basic examples of zone coverage and how to beat them.

With that being said, Tyler Bowen and the offense has continued to grow and develop the rushing attack with some new formations and wrinkles that when executed properly, can allow Tuten, Thomas, and Drones to exploit any defense that the Hokies face this season.  In the video, I am going to show you one example of this creativity.

Lastly, I'll briefly show why Jaylin Lane's Punt return was so successful.  It was classic example of timing and execution mixed with a little lane stadium luck. GO HOKIES!

This play is a great example of how Tyler Bowen continues to develop and scheme plays in the run game that when executed properly can be very successful.  This play gets the tight end in motion and utilizes pulling lineman to out leverage the defense and get Bhayshul Tuten out in space.  When executed properly, Bowen and Company still find creative ways to get the Hokies in space.

This punt return was a great example of individual effort combined with a little luck.  J-Lane gets a good start catching the punt on the run.  If it hadn't been for a great block and personal effort from Keli Lawson, Lane may not have been able to take it to the house.

Hokie Hitter: Marshall

Hokie

I am a 5th Generation Hokie. I have Orange and Maroon blood coursing through my veins. I was lucky enough to attend VT from 1999-2003 and graduated with a history degree. I became a history teacher and football coach working my way to spending multiple seasons as Head Coach at schools in North Carolina and Colorado.

I now live in Colorado, with my wife and son and do what I can to follow the Hokies from afar. The outstanding team here at Sons of Saturday was gracious enough to let me talk some football and be able to impart some my knowledge gained from years spent on the sideline.

Aside from following the Hokies in all sports, I am a fan of the Carolina Panthers, Atlanta Braves, and Carolina Hurricanes. I also try to play a lot of golf and enjoy skiing out here in the rockies!
