Hokie Hitter: Old Dominion
Some New Wrinkles in the Offense
While many Hokie fans have gripes about the efficiency of the offense this season, some complaints are valid. I have a slightly different perspective. While we seem to struggle at times, mostly due to execution, I see some creative blending of personnel and formation that will force future opponents to take time out of normal game week prep to focus on these wrinkles. This approach to gameplanning, when executed properly as we saw this week at ODU, can be very successful. Let's take a look at a few key plays that illustrate this point.
Drones to Lane TD 12:11 1st Qtr 1st and 10
This is known on Hokie Twitter as the “Parker Clements Jumping Jacks” play. The Hokies set Clements out wide, shifted the left tackle over, and brought a tight end to replace the left tackle. This play was an example of Bowen and Company exploiting an aggressive defense with formation to get Jaylin Lane wide open over the middle for the score.
Tuten TD with Tackle Over 15:00 4th Qtr 3rd and 1
This play the Hokies exploited the three man front that ODU was running with moving Parker Clements over to the left side of the formation allowing us to get bodies to the linebacker level of the defense. This split zone blocking on this play caused enough misdirection to allow Tuten to break a few arm tackles and hit paydirt. This play is a great example of moving pieces around the field to get the defense in a compromising position that Tech can use athletes to take advantage and get to the end zone!
