Virginia Tech Takes on Notre Dame in Day One of the ACC Tournament
Unlike last year’s ACC Tournament, Virginia Tech (18-13, 8-12) will be playing on day one against Notre Dame (11-20, 3-17).
Officially an 11-seed, the Hokies will technically be the “home” team, since the Fighting Irish are the 14-seed.
Notre Dame and Virginia Tech met once in the regular season in South Bend, Ind. on February 11, 2023. Virginia Tech came home triumphantly in what was an all-offense, no-defense game 93-87. Grant Basile exploded offensively, racking up 33 points to lead the Hokies.
For Virginia Tech to come out on top, they have to limit Notre Dame defensively. While the Hokies were hot and shot 57% from the floor and 43% from beyond the arc, Notre Dame was right there with them. Spearheaded by Nate Laszewski's 33 points, the Fighting Irish were 55% from field-goal range and also 43% from deep.
Another key factor will be Grant Basile. The Pewaukee, Wisc. native has notched 10+ points in the last 15 games.
Last season, Tech head coach Mike Young & Co. became the second team to win four games in four days to win the 2022 ACC Championship. Duke in 2017 was the other to do the same. If the Hokies were to make the magical run that they produced last year, Virginia Tech would become the first team ever in ACC history to win five games in five days.
