FIRED UP FU: Coach Justin Fuente joins the Sons!

By Billy Ray Mitchell | August 02

In this episode, all three Sons are joined by Virginia Tech head football coach Justin Fuente. Coach Fu began his career as a quarterback coach at Illinois State University. He was then hired as a co-offensive coordinator at Texas Christian University, where he would eventually win a Rose Bowl Championship. He then received his first head coaching nod from the University of Memphis in 2012, where he churned out a 26-23 overall record with the Tigers.

In 2015, Coach Fuente was hired to replace Virginia Tech legend Frank Beamer. It would be only a year later where Coach Fu would take the Hokies to their first ten win season since 2011. To cap off his inaugural season as head coach, he led the Hokies to a comeback Belk Bowl victory over the University of Arkansas.

Currently, Coach Fuente is entering his fifth season as the head coach of the Hokies. The 2020 team and coaching staff is unique for the following reasons:

1. It is the first team that is comprised of entirely Fuente recruits (minus Tyrell “Juice” Smith).

2. This is the first time since Coach Fu arrived where the coaching staff has no holdovers from the Frank Beamer era.
