My Dad graduated from Tech in 1981 and I’ve been attending Virginia Tech sporting events since I first moved to Blacksburg in 1988. I myself graduated in 2008 with a Communication degree. During my time as a student I was the Sports Director for WUVT and helped establish and run Planet Blacksburg, an independent student-run news website. I’ve since written for numerous publications including SBNation, Inside The ACC, and Sports Illustrated's AllHokies.
Currently, I host The Justin Cates Show in addition to other contributions here at Sons of Saturday and various other sites as the need arises. I now live in a fortified compound in upstate New York with my wife and numerous animals. The smell of popcorn makes me think of Cassell.

Cheers and Jeers: Virginia Tech vs. Virginia
It's hard to imagine a more fitting coda for the end of the Brent Pry/Phillip Montgomery era than the 27-7 dismantling the Hokies experienced at the hands of rival Virginia on Saturday night. There were flashes of life and even borderline competence sprinkled throughout much of …

Cheers and Cheers: Virginia Tech vs. Miami
While there are certainly plenty of things to complain about from Virginia Tech's 34-17 loss to No. 13 Miami, I'm not going to do it. I'm not going to chirp about the dreadful officiating that was an embarrassment to the conference, or the terrible broadcast which lost track of …

Cheers and Jeers: Virginia Tech vs. Florida State
I won't spend a ton of time doing a deep analysis of this game. We all know what happened. Once again the Hokies made critical mistakes throughout the contest and fell short late in the game. The first half was particularly abysmal with both teams demonstrating a severe allergy …

Cheers and Jeers: Virginia Tech vs. Louisville
Well the team certainly looked striking in those script helmets and they gave a good effort, but it wasn't enough against a more talented Louisville team. The Hokies fell 28-16 but surrendered 21 points without scoring in the second half. It's tough to win many like that. Lots o…

Cheers and Jeers: Virginia Tech vs. California
Much like the “Calgorithim”, I don’t know what the hell that was but I’ll take several more servings of the result this holiday season. No it wasn't pretty, particularly in the first half. You'd be hard-pressed to find a more dumb and fun way to spend a Friday night though. Tech…

Cheers and Jeers: Virginia Tech vs. Wake Forest
"My body is one big cramp" -Thom Brennaman That quote was the only memorable and agreeable contribution of the afternoon by Brennaman who continues to be generally bad in the booth along with his partner Will Blackmon. The second CW game in a row means we've heard a lot of these…

Cheers and Jeers: Virginia Tech vs. NC State
It was a perfect fall day with sunshine and highs in the low 70s where I was. I decided early on that I would just enjoy my Saturday despite the looming threat of a Hokie football game as a night cap. Even though I always say the only thing you can expect on Saturday's is the un…

Cheers and Jeers: Virginia Tech vs. Wofford
White Effect games always seem to go this way. They're early in the season and against some middling opponent of no interest to anyone. Tech usually bangs their heads against the wall at least a bit. They then end up winning by a comfortable margin while everyone slowly melts in…

Cheers and Jeers: Virginia Tech vs. Vanderbilt
I turned this game off with about seven minutes left in the fourth quarter after yet another entirely avoidable loss in what has become an endless string of them. That tells you a lot, and we will be veering off course this week on the good ship misery to unleash just one big, f…

Cheers and Jeers: Virginia Tech vs. South Carolina
Against my better judgement, we're doing this again. At this point one could argue that following and writing about Hokie football isn't particularly good for one's health, but I literally don't know another way to be a human being. People are born the way they are and if they'r…

Cheers and Jeers: Virginia Tech vs. Minnesota
Obviously, mayonnaise is a controversial proposition for many folks. I'm generally in favor of it, but I can appreciate those who have an aversion. What isn't up for debate is the greatness of the Duke's Mayo Bowl. I consider it the second best bowl game to the absolutely electr…
Cheers and Jeers: Virginia Tech vs. Duke
I didn't rush getting to this write-up partly out of laziness, but also because I didn't figure too many of our loyal readers were clamoring for another complaint session falling a close Hokie loss. When a promising opening 61-yard return was called back for us, it felt like par…

Cheers and Jeers: Virginia Tech vs. Clemson
Jeers There are plenty of things to complain about here but really, what's the point? This season has gone so utterly sideways that it's tough to pick a real culprit. Alleged star quarterback Kyron Drones has been bad. Against Clemson he fully regressed to an indecisive howitzer…

Cheers and Jeers: Virginia Tech vs. Syracuse
Look, obviously the dome isn't cursed*. Myself and any rational human observer gets that. But I disagree with the notion that Virginia Tech's complete failure over the decades in that building means nothing. In ten trips the Hokies have only a late-stage Bill Dooley victory from…

Cheers and Jeers: Virginia Tech vs. Georgia Tech
Georgia Tech played about as poorly as they could have and for much of the game the Hokies tried desperately to match that energy. Nevertheless, they persisted and the good Tech came out on top with what qualifies as a comfortable win for this squad with a 21-6 victory. The broa…

Cheers and Jeers: Virginia Tech vs. Stanford
If there's one thing Hokies know, it's how to do work down on the farm. The football boys certainly took that to heart and whooped up on the smart kids from out west 31-7 in near triple-digit temperatures Saturday at sunny Stanford. A lot of things went right for Tech and ended …

Cheers and Jeers: Virginia Tech vs. Miami
Well, that was certainly unexpected. We entered this game with many people, myself included, fully expecting Miami to roll over the Hokies like the top ten team they are. But much to its credit this Tech crew showed up in a big way and for all intents and purposes pulled a huge …

Cheers and Jeers: Virginia Tech vs. Rutgers
It's incredibly frustrating to keep writing each week what is essentially the blueprint of a Brent Pry era game. A dreadful first quarter or half yields to an inevitable furious comeback and gutting defeat. That's the book on this group until proven otherwise and while the off-s…

Cheers and Jeers: Virginia Tech vs. Old Dominion
I tend to stay out of our running SOS group chat during games because it skews a tad reactionary for my tastes. I've seen way too many Tech games at this point to freak out too much about any particular thing —be it good or bad— or even a series of things. With this team in part…
