WOMEN’S SOCCER TAKES A POINT IN A 1-1 DRAW AGAINST SMU

The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team traveled to Dallas, Texas to play ACC foe SMU on Thursday, October 8 with potential post-season dynamics at stake. Even though SMU was winless in the ACC, its RPI rating of 49 would put it in the conversation for an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. Virginia Tech’s RPI ranking of 66 has the Hokies looking outside in, so a win against the Mustangs would help the Hokies’ post-season cause.

SMU has an aggressive style of play, running to and aggressively pressuring any opposing player with the ball. Virginia Tech was not ready for SMU’s pressure. As soon as a Hokie player had the ball, a SMU player sprinted to the ball, ultimately speeding up the Hokies and making possessions hectic.  Virginia Tech experienced turnovers or passes out of bounds simply due to SMU’s pressure. The questions would be could the Mustangs sustain that energy over the course of the game and would Virginia Tech experience a breakdown.

SMU’s aggressiveness also had the possibility of the Mustangs being susceptible to a counterattack if Virginia Tech could break that pressure.

The Hokies did make the Mustangs pay in the 33rd minute, barely twelve minutes into the game.. SMU passed back across into their side of midfield, but Jessica Osborne lost the ball. Virginia Tech’s senior captain Anna Weir pressured Osborne, pounced on the loose ball, and raced toward goal. Osborne tugged on Weir’s jersey from behind, but the referee allowed advantage. SMU’s keeper Aubrey Brown came out to challenge Weir, lunging with her foot; however, Weir kept her composure despite defense from both Osborne and the keeper. She made a touch to her right, which freed her up in front of an open net, and punched it past the final defender for her career 7th goal of the season to give the Hokies a 1-0 lead.

goal no. 7 for @annaweir_14 = a new career high ‼️ #Hokies

The Mustangs came back and earned a corner kick. Tech defenders cleared the kick, but SMU jumped on the clearance and took a shot on goal that Tech goalkeeper Julianna Trujillo secured.

SMU’s pressure led to more opportunities for the Mustangs. Their best moment came in the early third of the game when the Tech’s defense let the ball go through, underestimating SMU”s speed and tenacity to the ball. Trujillo came out to stop the attack, and defender Elle Robertson tried to muscle the SMU player off the ball, but the Mustang found herself with an open shot on goal that went in; however, the offsides flag went up immediately, rendering the play void and preserving Virginia Tech’s 1-0 lead.

The Hokies had a chance to add to their lead as Virginia Tech earned a corner kick. Midfielder Hannah Pachan delivered a nice ball into the box that felllow midfielder Peyton May got a head on, but the ball went over the goal.

SMU’s aggressiveness finally paid off with 15 minutes remaining in the first half. Tech's Syri Davis tried to move the ball back to Trujillo from the midfield, but her pass was a slow roller.  SMU’s Zoey Prkhurst ran onto the ball and delivered a shot on goal from 25 yards out. Trujillo deflected the initial effort, but SMU's Kamiya Beck jumped on the rebound, resulting in a gaame-tying score for the Mustangs..

Both teams had multiple opportunities in the second half. SMU had a breakaway late in the game, but Trujillo made a diving save to preserve the tie. With 15 minutes left in the match, the Mustangs sent a corner kick into the box that was destined for the net. Lili Lubic made an amazing save, kicking the ball with her leg over the goal.

Unfortunately, every time Virginia Tech found the SMU keeper out of position, another Mustang defender was behind the keeper to knock the ball away.

The tie to finish the game left the Hokies at 6-3-4 on the season with an 2-2-1 ACC record. SMU fell to 5-4-4, with an 0-4–2 ACC record.

Next, the Hokies host No. 14 ranked Virginia (6-3-2) for the Smithfield Commonwealth Clash on Friday, October 17 at 7:30. The game will be televised on ACCNX.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL LOSES TO UNC AND THEN DROPS 5-SET HEARTBREAKER TO DUKE

Virginia Tech Loses in 3 Sets to #24 North Carolina, 11-25, 18-25, 16-25

The Virginia Tech volleyball team lost in three sets to No. 25 ranked UNC Tarheels in  Cassell Coliseum last Friday, October 9.

The Hokies stayed with the Tarheels early in all three sets, but then UNC would go on streaks of points that put each set away.

In the first set, Virginia Tech went toe-to-toe with UNC with kills by Destiny Walker, Frances Torres, Reese Hazelton, and Adeline Hundl helping the Hokies stay with 10-11.  North Carolina suffered from its own attacking errors and service errors that kept the set close. Then, UNC settled in and put down four straight errors to expand what was a 2-point deficit to a 10-16 margin. An attack error by Reese Hazelton made it 10-17, prompting a timeout by Virginia Tech.

OH. MY. RALLY! 🤯 Block by Addie and Izzy! S1 VT 9 | UNC 10

Unfortunately, UNC’s momentum continued as the Hokies could not deliver any solid opportunities. They committed five more hitting errors that sandwiched Tarheel kills to break open the set to 10-24 before succumbing 11-25.

The set featured too many long hits or offensive possessions in which hitters had to just put the ball back over the next. Every time the Hokies had to settle for getting the ball back over, the Tarheels made them pay. In fact, Virginia Tech only had 4 kills in the set to 9 errors and a negative hitting percentage. Torres was the only hitter who had a positive hitting percentage. Meanwhile, UNC had 14 kills and a .345 hitting percentage. Virginia Tech’s Hazelton was busy with 10 receptions.
The Hokies fought back in the second and third sets, but the results were similar.  Initially, Virginia Tech was close to getting blown out, finding itself down 1-6 in the second set because of four more hitting errors. After collecting themselves, the Hokies began to claw their way back into the set. Isabella Mishler, Paloma Zubiri, Hundl, and Torres delivered multiple kills to bring the Hokies back within two points at 10-12.

However, UNC began to pull away for a 18-25 win. The Hokies hit .196 as they found Mishler in the middle for 4 kills and Hundl and Layla Moore for 3 each. Camilla Brandalise had 7 assists after only having 2 in the first set.

IZZY MISHLER PUTS IT DOWN! 💥 S2 VT 14 | UNC 20

Virginia Tech stayed within three at 9-12 in the third set until UNC began to pull away again behind several kills and service aces. Torres helped Tech close to within 13-16 before a series of kills by UNC and hitting errors by Tech widened the margin to 13-22. From there, UNC closed out the match, 16-25.

Match Notes:

• Isabella Mishler led Virginia Tech with five kills while hitting. 286.

• Layla Moore added four kills without committing an error. She hit a team high .667.

• Frances Torres and Adeline Hundl had four kills apiece.

• Palmoma Zubiri and Reese Hazelton each contribute two kills.

• UNC had 42 kills for a .293 hitting percentage compared to Virginia Tech’s 23 kills with a .009 hitting percentage.

• Camilla Brandalise led the Hokies with 13 assists and was third on the team with 6 digs.

• Ivy Cooper led the team with 12 digs whereas Zubiri contributed 8.

Virginia Tech Has Duke on the Ropes But Falls in Five Sets, 16-25, 25-19, 25-18, 23-25, 11-15

The Hokies welcomed the Duke Blue Devils to Cassell Coliseum on Sunday, October 11 looking to rebound from the Tarheel loss.

Virginia Tech struggled to sustain a consistent offense and defense in the first two sets. The Hokies could not find the court on hits, while Duke delivered kills and found holes in the middle on dump overs.  Reese Hazelton tried to keep Virginia Tech in the first set with two early kills, but Tech was down 2-7 quickly and never recovered.  The closest the Hokies could get was within 6 points at 10-16, but the deficit was too large as the Tarheels reeled off a 9-6 run to put away the set, 16-25.

With every sign pointing to Virginia Tech getting blown off its home court, the Hokies flipped a switch in the second set and turned the match on its head.  The two teams battled out to a 5-5 tie, with kills by Adeline Hundl, Isabella Mishler, and Destiny Walker pacing the Hokies early.

Virginia Tech began playing some of its best volleyball of the season. The Hokies delivered really good serves resulting in aces, poor passing by the Tarheels that frequently caught them in out-of-system offense situations and forced them into a poor hitting percentage. The Hokie hitters punished Duke with kill after kill from six different hitters. In addition, Virginia Tech was not allowing the little dumps into the middle that had fallen untouched in the first set. Players were moving to the ball and playing inspired volleyball.

With the score 5-5, the Hokies went on a 11-5 run that put them up 16-10. Every time Duke tried to cut into the lead, Virginia Tech responded. If there was a bad set by Tech, Duke could not capitalize as it would commit a service error.  An attacking error by Tech that gave Duke a point was sandwiched by two kills from Reese Hazelton that made it 19-12.

After a timeout by Duke gave them a moment to recapture momentum and close the gap to 21-16, Virginia Tech called a timeout to regroup. Kills by Frances Torres, Hazelton, Mishler, and Layla Moore closed out the second set, 25-19.

The Hokies carried their quality play into the third set, jumping out to a 6-1 lead behind kills from Hazelton and Walker. Duke looked like it had started to figure things out as it clawed back to within one at 11-10, but Virginia Tech squashed the Blue Devil runs and pulled away to win the third set, 25-18.

The match turned in the fourth set. The Hokies were down 5-9, when they turned the set around. Hundl, Hazelon, Mishler, and Walker all delivered kills while Duke committed enough mistakes that allowed Virginia Tech to tie the set at 11-11. The Hokies continued that momentum, putting point after point away, pulling out to a 19-13 lead.

With the Hokies 6 points from its second ACC win of the season, lady momentum swung back to the Blue Devils. Five attack errors allowed Duke to go on a 7-1 run to tie the set at 20-20. A crucial net call against Duke was overturned on review in what turned what would have been a 20-18 Tech lead into a 20-19 score. From there, the two teams traded points until a Hokie attack error put them down 22-24. A kill by Hazelton brought the Hokies within one, but Duke finished the set, 23-25.

The match went to a fifth and deciding set.  With the teams tied at 6-6, Duke started to pull away and won 15-11. While the Hokies had featured quality passing in the earlier sets, they had too many inefficient offensive opportunities where poor first contact on passing and bump setting threw off the timing of hitters.

The Hokies had three hitters with double-digit kills: Hazelton led the team with 15, Walker had 12, and Hundl had 11. Indeed, Hazelton and Walker both had double doubles with 12 and 15 digs, respectively.

However, I think that the Hokies did not go to Mishler enough in the middle. She was the team leader in hitting percentage with a blistering .353 and had 8 kills, but she was barely targeted, with only one kill in the fifth set. Other teams have shown diversity in the use of the middle, often rolling them into a wing position. Virginia Tech shows flashes of using the middle but typically goes to the outside.

Match Notes:

• Virginia Tech had 68 total kills to Duke’s 67.

• Destiny Walker and Reese Hazelton both had double-doubles: Walker had 12 kills and 15 digs. Hazelton had 15 kills and 12 digs.

• Adeline Hundl finished with 11 kills and a .286 hitting percentage.

• Isabella Mishler had 8 kills and a .353 hitting percentage that probably begs for more targets.

• Layla Moore (5) and Frances Torres (3) also contributed kills.

• Camilla Brandalise delivered 30 assists.and had 9 digs.

• Ivy Cooper was second on the team with 13 digs.

• Freshman Courtney Burgess added 10 assists and 5 digs.

Up Next:  Virginia Tech is playing at UVA in a Commonwealth Clash home-and-home series on Wednesday, October 14 at 7:00. It is streamed on ACCN. The two teams will turn around and play each other again in Blacksburg on Friday, October 16 at 6:00. That game will be streamed on ACCNX.
