Week 5

Good Morning Hokie Nation! It's Gameday! Week 5 of the college football season for the Hokies begins today. They travel to Chapel Hill to take on the North Carolina Tar Heels at 3:30 est on the ACCN. Week 4 was a tough week for the Hokies as we saw them lose to the Mountaineers at home on Thursday night. The defense played pretty well in the first half of their matchup only for them to get gassed and allow the WVU run game to take over the game. On the other side of the ball, the game was pretty uneventful for the Hokie offense. They just couldn’t get any drives going into Mountaineer territory. Their first couple of drives were converted into points despite a turnover on downs early in the first half in WVU territory. The run game for the Hokies was shut down pretty much the whole game which made it hard for Grant Wells to find open receivers. While being an overall tough game for the Hokies filled with penalties, they look to bounce back in Chapel Hill today.

For the North Carolina Tar Heels, they are coming off a tough game against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in which they lost 45-32. This game was a shootout as QB’s Drew Pyne and Drake Maye combined for almost 600 yards passing and 8 touchdowns. The problem for UNC since the start of the season has of course been their defense and not being able to stop teams from scoring. With Virginia Tech coming into town, they hope for their defense to have a great performance and continue to put points on the board.

Weather

With tropical storm Ian making it's way up the east coast, this game looks to avoid the brunt of the storm but will receive the after effects from it. Moderate temperatures and some rain look to favor the Hokies defense.

Born in Chesapeake and raised into a family of hokies, Virginia Tech is where I call home now. Attended New River Community College as a freshman and now a sophomore at VT as a transfer student in Fall 2022. Majoring in Sports Media and Analytics, I’m excited for what’s to come for me as a student at VT.

Virginia Tech sports has always been something I have been a fan of. From afternoons in Lane Stadium to nights in Cassell Coliseum, I have loved every second of it no matter the outcome.

One of my first memories of being a Tech fan was our upset win against Ohio State 35-21 where CB Donovan Riley had the game sealing pick-6. More recently, beating UNC in 6 overtimes, our run to the sweet 16, and of course winning the men’s basketball ACC Championship with upsets over UNC and Duke.
