Good Morning Football: Week 7

Good morning Hokies! After a tough game with No. 4 Florida State, Virginia Tech is headed back to the Burg for a homecoming weekend matchup with Wake Forest. Demon Deacons at Hokies is scheduled for kickoff at 3:30 p.m. on ABC. In addition to homecoming, today’s game is also the annual Maroon Effect game.

Game Outlook

Wake Forest looked solid against Clemson, who sits two slots above VT in the ACC rankings. In contrast, the Demon Deacons also narrowly squeaked out a win against ODU earlier in the season, managing a 17-point comeback beginning late in the third quarter. They have a very odd offensive play style, which should be difficult on the Tech defense (more on this here). If Tech can hold strong on the defensive front, I would expect a 3-4 record by Saturday night.

While the 22-point loss to Florida State last week isn’t the most encouraging on the surface, the Hokies had some bright moments against one of the top programs in the country. RB Bhayshul Tuten was a major contributor to Tech’s 17-point run, which cut the score to a manageable 17-22 after an abysmal start. Tuten had two TDs, the first on a short 5-yard rush, and the second on a 99-yard kickoff return to start the second half. His explosive ability has provided the Hokies with life during the midseason. Tuten has to remain a key piece in the Hokies’ offense to continue winning games.

It'll also be interesting to see how the Hokies' defense fairs without S Jaylen Stroman in the first half. Stroman was ejected during the 3rd quarter of the FSU game for targeting, and will consequently miss the first half of today's game. Stroman has the 2nd most tackles and assists on the team, trailing only LB Keli Lawson.

Weather

Unfortunately, it looks like we’ll see some rain throughout the day. In combination with the Blacksburg Fall weather, it’ll get chilly, particularly in the second half. Consider bringing a jacket/poncho and pants.

Me Ronnie

Born into a family of Hokies, I can remember watching Frank Beamer and Tyrod Taylor on Saturdays with the family, so attending VT was always the dream.

In 2020, I began my time at Virginia Tech in the Sports Media Analytics program and eventually joined the Sons in January of 2023 as the softball beat writer. Now, I’ve got football, basketball, and baseball coverage, plus you’ll see some of my photographs in articles throughout the website.

Graduation is on the horizon, but I can’t wait to come back in the fall to begin my Master’s and continue working with the team!
