What an outstanding night in Blacksburg!  The Hokies were made for Thursdays on ESPN and they proved it against BC!  Great job by the coaches and players in their preparation off a bye week and tremendous execution in all three phases.  This week I'm taking a look at two of the many scoring plays the Hokies had in this game.  The first is the Tuten 83 yard Touchdown run which a great example of using motion and formation to make execution easier.  The second play, is the Drones to Tuten pass at the end of the first half.  This play shows how our players are playing with confidence within the system and making plays in space with a little improvisation!

GO HOKIES!

12:55 2nd Qtr 1st and 10: Tuten 83 yd Touchdown Run

This play is a display of everything Hokie fans have been longing to see out of the Tech run game.  It combined the breakaway ability of Tuten, with PERFECT blocking execution by the offensive line.  This is a buck sweep concept, utilizing the H-back as the kick out block and and the backside tackle as the wrap linemen, whose job is to block the second level at the point of attack.  Tech’s formation at the snap got the BC defense spread out and used motion to get the defense to shift into the play allowing the blocking scheme to be executed perfectly.  Great playcall and great execution by all involved.

:23 2nd Qtr 1st and 10: Drones to Tuten Improv Touchdown

One thing that has drawn my attention over the course of the season, has been our use of the scramble drill when blocking breaks down.  Usually the deep routes will work in and the short routes work deep to create confusion.  On this play, against a two-high safety look, the Hokies ran a DIPO concept to the wide side of the field.  This along with the sail concept on short side, drew the entire secondary away.  Bhayshul Tuten on this play, was assigned a flare route as a checkdown and used to draw the Mike linebacker out of the middle of the field.  When Drones is forced out of the pocket and has to escape, Tuten does a phenomenal job of improvising and wheeling up the sideline allowing Drones to hit him in stride for the score.  Great job by the offense of improvising on a busted play and taking advantage of our athleticism at the skill positions!

Hokie

I am a 5th Generation Hokie. I have Orange and Maroon blood coursing through my veins. I was lucky enough to attend VT from 1999-2003 and graduated with a history degree. I became a history teacher and football coach working my way to spending multiple seasons as Head Coach at schools in North Carolina and Colorado.

I now live in Colorado, with my wife and son and do what I can to follow the Hokies from afar. The outstanding team here at Sons of Saturday was gracious enough to let me talk some football and be able to impart some my knowledge gained from years spent on the sideline.

Aside from following the Hokies in all sports, I am a fan of the Carolina Panthers, Atlanta Braves, and Carolina Hurricanes. I also try to play a lot of golf and enjoy skiing out here in the rockies!
