Controversial Ending Drops Hokies to 2-3

After a disappointing 2-2 start to their out-of-conference schedule, the Virginia Tech Hokies turned their focus to the challenging ACC slate ahead. Their first test came against the formidable No. 7 Miami Hurricanes, arguably the toughest opponent they would face all season.

Determined to showcase their potential for the remainder of the year, the Hokies delivered a gritty performance that spanned four hard-fought quarters — something fans have been waiting to see from a Hokies team with so much promise. On the last play of the game, down by four, Kyron Drones launched a Hail Mary in a desperate bid for victory. While called a touchdown on the field, the play was thwarted when replay showed that Da'Quon Felton did not maintain possession, leaving the Hokies heartbroken with a narrow 38-34 loss. This "controversial" loss drops the Hokies to 2-3 on the season.

While the last-second touchdown ultimately fell short, the Hokies’ offense showcased something that had been elusive this season — a full 60 minutes of dynamic play.

Running back Bhayshul "Tug Boat" Tuten continued his impressive season, racking up 141 rushing yards on 19 carries and finding the end zone once again. This performance marks his fourth consecutive game with over 100 yards on the ground and his seventh straight game with a touchdown. Tuten’s consistent excellence is a promising sign for the Hokies moving forward.

Kyron Drones showcased his versatility, rushing for 52 yards on 9 carries while also delivering an impressive performance through the air. He completed 19 passes, throwing for two touchdowns despite one interception, finishing with a total of 189 yards — his fourth consecutive game under 200 yards.

On the receiving front, five Hokies made significant contributions, each grabbing three or more receptions: Stephen Gosnell (4), Jaylin Lane (4), Bhayshul Tuten (4), Benji Gosnell (3), and Ayden Greene (3).

On special teams, John Love continued to showcase his exceptional skills in a Hokie uniform, delivering an impressive performance that included two field goals of over 50 yards — a stunning 57-yarder just before halftime and a 52-yarder to kick off the third quarter. He also maintained perfection on extra points, going 4-for-4.

Shifting to the defensive side, Virginia Tech delivered an impressive performance, limiting Miami to their lowest point total of the season. The Hokies’ secondary shone brightly, recording two interceptions — the most they've achieved in a single game this year — courtesy of former Miami Hurricane Kaleb Spencer early in the third quarter and Mose Phillips III in the second. Additionally, the defense set the tone right from the start, forcing and recovering a fumble on Miami's opening drive, with Cole Nelson making the force and Sam Brumfield securing the recovery. Overall, it was a night of standout defensive plays that showcased Virginia Tech's tenacity and skill despite the result.

With a lot of positives to take away from this game, the Hokies aim to even out their record when they take on the Stanford Cardinal on Saturday, October 5, at 3:30 PM EST.

Born in Northern Virginia, I traveled down the state to attend Virginia Tech. Throughout my time here in Blacksburg, I have been able to cover tons of Hokie sports. My favorite Virginia Tech sports moment of the year is when the Women’s Basketball team went into a sold out NC State and took them down 72-61, beating them for the second time on the season.

Outside of school I am still a sports fanatic. With my dad growing up in Wisconsin, I was born into the Wisconsin fandom, following the Packers, Bucks and Brewers. With baseball being my favorite sport, I run my own baseball media company, Around the Globe Baseball, creating content for my website and social media about the latest MLB buzz.

I joined Sons of Saturday in February of 2024 as a writer for Virginia Tech Softball.
