Top-Ranked Virginia Defensive End Gerard Johnson Commits to Virginia Tech
Virginia Beach Defensive End Gerard Johnson chooses the Hokies
In Brent Pry’s first press conference as the head whistle at Virginia Tech, he stressed the importance of taking Virginia high school recruiting back. Gerard Johnson, a 6”4’, 240lb edge rusher, is ranked as four-star recruit and the #1 player in the state of Virginia by On3.com.
Johnson got his offer from the Hokies during the spring evaluation period before his junior season. He committed to VT over Duke, West Virginia, Vanderbilt, UVA, and others.
Johnson took official visits to Virginia and Virginia Tech. Those schools made up the top two he made his college decision from. His lead recruiter for Virginia Tech was defensive line coach JC Price. He was also recruited to VT by current linebacker and high school teammate of his, George Ballance.
Gerard Johnson anchored the defense of the Cox High Falcons (Virginia Beach). He had eight sacks and 19 TFLs this season for the Falcons. In addition to wreaking havoc on the defensive line, he was a powerful tight end on the offensive side of the ball.
Johnson used his strength and power to bull rush offensive lineman and blow up plays. He has quick feet and uses his hands effectively to thwart the offense's plans.
This is a great pickup by Brent Pry in the historic 757 Hampton Roads area. Overall, Johnson gives the Hokies D-Line a boost in aggressiveness and technique and he will be force in the front-seven for years to come in the orange and maroon.
