Tyree Saunders on his official visit in 2020

It was announced on Thursday that Virginia Tech WR Tyree Saunders would be entering his name into the Transfer Portal. This comes as a shock to many, as Saunders seemed to be a WR that was going to blend well into the system for the Hokies.

Saunders joined the Virginia Tech 2020 Recruiting Class in September of 2019. He was rated as a 0.8614 (3-Star), according to 247 Sports. During his recruitment, he also ranked as the 126th WR nationally and the 810th player in the nation.

The 6-1, 175 pound wide receiver came into Blacksburg with dreams of being a key piece for this team. However, with an influx of competition and veterans getting a great bit of the playing time, it was not an outlandish decision by Saunders. And with no clear path of playing either at the slot spot or out wide for the offense, it was clear for Saunders that he would want to explore other opportunities.

Tyree Saunders will enter the NCAA Transfer Portal as a redshirt freshman, with many more years of eligibility under his belt. One would think that he may try to move closer to his home state of Florida. Some programs that come to mind for Saunders would be USF, who he was previously committed to before Virginia Tech, and perhaps UCF, due to the close proximity to home.

What’s going on Hokie Nation! My name is Evan Norris and I am currently a junior studying HNFE here at Virginia Tech. I’ve grown up a Hokie my whole life, with family members being huge Hokie fans.

Growing up I’ve witnessed Virginia Tech Recruiting first-hand through family friends being recruited and through players at the University. Also growing up in some of the best recruiting areas the state has to offer, in the Hampton Roads Area and Richmond Area, I have seen great high school football growing up. This has led me to strive for a future career in college football recruiting. I run @RecruitVT on Twitter/Instagram to keep up engagement with prospective recruits and fans alike.
