Saunders joined the Virginia Tech 2020 Recruiting Class in September of 2019. He was rated as a 0.8614 (3-Star), according to 247 Sports. During his recruitment, he also ranked as the 126th WR nationally and the 810th player in the nation.
The 6-1, 175 pound wide receiver came into Blacksburg with dreams of being a key piece for this team. However, with an influx of competition and veterans getting a great bit of the playing time, it was not an outlandish decision by Saunders. And with no clear path of playing either at the slot spot or out wide for the offense, it was clear for Saunders that he would want to explore other opportunities.
Tyree Saunders will enter the NCAA Transfer Portal as a redshirt freshman, with many more years of eligibility under his belt. One would think that he may try to move closer to his home state of Florida. Some programs that come to mind for Saunders would be USF, who he was previously committed to before Virginia Tech, and perhaps UCF, due to the close proximity to home.
