No. 16 Virginia Tech vs. Rutgers | Sunday, December 17, 5:30 p.m. | Piscataway, NJ

Rutgers (6-7) is led by guard Kaylene Smikle. The sophomore was on the All-Big Ten Second Team and Big Ten All-Freshman Team last season. Smikle averages 17.0 PPG, 5.6 RPG, and 2.7 APG. She’s a quality defender as well, with 1.8 steals.

Behind Smikle is Destiny Adams, a 6’3” transfer from UNC. The junior shoots at a slightly higher percentage with 13.3 PPG. With her height, she leads the team in rebounds at 7.9 and steals with 2.1.

While the Scarlet Knights lost to Princeton on Wednesday, they hung around with No. 15 Indiana on December 9th, who sits just one place above VT on the AP Top 25. Rutgers trailed most of the game but stayed in striking distance with a max deficit of 11.

Playing at Rutgers isn’t a great environment for the visiting team, but the sheer talent of this roster should carry them through. Rutgers will put up a good fight just like Indiana; but just like Indiana, the Hokies should come out on top.

Me Ronnie

Born into a family of Hokies, I can remember watching Frank Beamer and Tyrod Taylor on Saturdays with the family, so attending VT was always the dream.

In 2020, I began my time at Virginia Tech in the Sports Media Analytics program and eventually joined the Sons in January of 2023 as the softball beat writer. Now, I’ve got football, basketball, and baseball coverage, plus you’ll see some of my photographs in articles throughout the website.

Graduation is on the horizon, but I can’t wait to come back in the fall to begin my Master’s and continue working with the team!
